‘Please throw me a ball’ is what’s always up Zack Hample’s mind and almost written on his eager face. September 1977 born New Yorker is very popular man in his community for a ‘unique’ hobby of its own kind. He’s recognized as master at snagging the homerun balls in various stadiums before millions of viewers over the years and a ‘goofy celebration dance’ has become his special identity.
Although countless people must have watched a man catching the balls in almost every game and every stadium but didn’t know him until one particular incident made him recognized worldwide. ESPN along with many other International channels covered the story such as CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN International, and many other media outlets.
It was at Yankee Stadium during the final week ever that on consecutive nights, Hample caught homerun balls. Jason Giambi’s homerun catch by Hample was a worth watching one. The fabulous leaping catch was followed by the goofy dance that was captured on the canvas by TV cameras. Next night same place same person did the same thing; an extraordinary backhand catch of Johnny Damon homerun ball from over a railing, and celebration goofy dance! He was recognized by the Yankees commentators and within a few hours, all the above mentioned TV channels made the story out of it and Zac Hample was all over the place.
He is also the writer of many books. “How to Snag Major League Baseballs,” was published in 1999, followed by “Watching Baseball Smarter” that proved to be the 8th best selling book of the year on American sports. Zack has lots of hopes from his upcoming book “The Baseball: Five Ounces and 108 Stitches of Glory,” publishing in the year 2011.
His unique ‘collection’ of Major League baseballs started with Mets’ reliever at the ‘Shea Stadium’ in 1990 (june 20). Then onwards, the number turned from hundreds to thousands and now he holds the possession of as many as 4,532 balls.
