Wings Over Homestead

Homestead Air Force base was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Both Presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush made a powerful discussion to reconstruct it because it was an Air force reserve base. The Thunderbirds, Us Air Force Jet Car, US Army Screaming Eagles Jump Team and F-15 Eagle demonstration team performed free display in two days. Also a performance made by Major Sean Gustafson who was a former major of military force lived in Palmetto Bay.

He flied the No. 4 aircraft Thunderbirds diamond formation in two consecutive days. An almost diamond shape made my four jets which were take off, he said. Major Gustafson Said, “The diamond demonstrates the precision of the Air Force.” He was the first Air force reserve pilot selected to fly Thunderbirds since the team’s commencement in 1953. There was a big noise.

On late Wednesday, a notice has been given up by Pinecrest officials that because of the air show. There may be the presence of military aircraft in Pinecrest’s air space in the coming days. Brig. Gen. William Binger said, “This is a great opportunity to put Homestead on the map.”

In 2200 acre base, 2000 former majors of military that are allocated to the wing. In Afghanistan and Iraq which were the war zones, 400 to 500 women and men are position of readiness. In a couple of years, the numbers are hoped to become larger as the base expects to get constantly working. Binger said, “The base is in a good strategic location for the Caribbean.” “Based where we are, we are staging point where goods and services come in. We work hand-in-hand with FEMA to help folks in the keys and the area.”

After a year ago, Binger who joined the Air Force in 1981 and travel through the air 40 times in Iraq says stratigic plans. Maj. Sean Carpenter said, “There tends to be 1,000 different logistical tasks prior to letting 100,000 people on the base.” He also said, “We call this internally an ‘Open House.’ We are bringing people on the base to show what the military does in Homestead but also an increased awareness of what they do on missions in Afghanistan and Iraq.”

According to Beacon Council, there were 47000 direct and indirect jobs, many other processes of installing, US Southern command and 3.7$ per year on The Homestead Air Base Reserve. Binger says that the Homestead base’s contribution to that figure is $220 million annually. Binger said, “I want to see us move on from Andrew.” He also added, “When I came down here I was really surprised at the lack of local awareness of the base and what the citizen airmen here do for this nation. What better way to highlight the base than an air show?”
