Tyler Perry made 60 Minutes tough for Spike Lee over his past comments last night. Film director 52-year-old Spike Lee had termed Tyler’s work as ‘coonery and buffoonery’ in the month of May. During an interview on 60 Minutes, American actor Tyler Perry had a back fire. The video of the interview is attached.
In an episode of famous interview and talk show ’60 Minutes’ on 26 October 2009, 40-year-old extremely successful American actor, director, and producer Tyler Perry who is also an author, burst out at Spike Lee during a ‘hot’ interview. The video of the interview is being watched by millions already.
Tyler Perry’s television plays and movies have earned him a lot of respect and recognition not only in the United States but worldwide and if we look at the 2009 stats alone, little under $400 million have been grossed only through Tyler’s movies whereas the stats of his plays have not been included in the figure above. The year 2008 stats also show an enormous figure as $75 million that almost included his name among the top-5 Hollywood’s highest-paid males.
Yet in the month of May this year, Shelton Jackson “Spike” Lee who’s also from the same profession and a well-known film director, actor, producer as well as a writer himself, termed Tyler Perry’s quite impressive and praise worthy performances as “buffoonery” and “coonery” that included TBS sitcoms such as ‘Meet the Browns’ and ‘House of Payne.’ Spike did so while talking to Ed Gordon during the show ‘Our World with Black Enterprise.’
If Tyler Perry feels he was ‘degraded’ and ‘defamed’ by such pissing-off remarks by Spike, he seems to be right as Spike Lee criticized the characters whom Tyler considers sort of enticement for viewers to think and talk about faith, family, love and most of all, God. The director of ‘Do the Right Thing’ Spike Lee on the other hand says Perry’s work comes at time when President Barack Obama’s election has made great pace.
Tyler didn’t like the criticism at all and said it was very insulting to be considered as African-Americans monolithic group and him being referred to Amos n’ Andy,” Continued with his statement Tyler added, “such attitudes have made Hollywood feel blacks don’t even exist.” In short, Tyler Perry is not willing to accept that his work is degrading African-Americans in any context.
