Pennhurst State School and Hospital

In 1908, a School and Hospital named The Pennhurst State School and Hospital was opened which serve on the border between Chester County and Montgomery County in Pennsylvania. The property of Pennhurst was very huge almost sheltering 1400 acres (5.7 Km2). It was one of the largest organizations of its kind in Pennsylvania. The main ambition was to help those people who are physically and mentally disabled.

Most of young generation and children were brought by the parents. Some children’s parents never came to see them, therefore they lived alone. In accordance with the mental level of the disabled, they had a distinct system. Most of them were not in a position to feed and bath themselves. After medical care some of them were become active as they do their work themselves.

The badly damaged patients were spend time in a small bed where they could not turnover. The disabled demanded a continuous attention because of their miserable condition but this was a very tough burden for the Doctors. A time came when hospital became flooded and there were no more doctors to take proper care of every child. Some patients force the Doctors to take care of them by abusing.

In 1987, a case was reopened which was filed against Pennhurst in 1977 and The Pennhurst School and Hospital closed by Raymond j Broderick (District Judge) after they have searched that the patients were raped, violated, beat and had not given them their rights. On July 1, 1986, the patients were started moving from school and hospital to their houses. That process lasted many years. 460 patients were released or forwarded to other facilities without permission.
