25-year-old Jeremy Ryan Hermida joins Boston Red Sox in trade for Hunter Jones. Florida Marlins traded the left-handed Jeremy Ryan Hermida to Boston Red Sox worth Hunter as well as Jose Alvarez. The best-paid player this year at $2.25 million failed to come up to the expectations of Florida Marlins.
The Florida Marlins’ team management decided that the 11th overall pick in 2002 Jeremy Ryan Hermida who had yet to fulfill his projected potential the team always looked for, needs a change. Therefore, in a sort of foreshadowing trade the Florida Marlins sent the youngster to the Boston Red Sox and the left-handed Jeremy Hermida paved way for yet another couple of left-handed Boston players Hunter Jones and Jose Alvarez, respectively.
Though Hermida was among Florida’s best-paid players this year at $2.25 million, but his overall performance in the recent past i.e. only .259 with 13 home runs and 47 RBIs in 129 games, was becoming a constant threat for him. Finally on Thursday November 5, 2009, the inevitable happened and he’s become a former Florida Marlins’ player overnight.
Under the present economic conditions, this winter there may be even more such trades wherein the very stable teams (in terms of finances) may be trading their high-paid players to the ones who would afford their salaries. No matter such teams would be losing the potential as well.
So now the former first-round Marlins’ pick who has always been regarded by Baseball America whereby he once he kept on occupying overall fourth position, will have to prove Boston Red Sox choice worth it. It is very evident that all Red Sox are looking for in Hermida, is the young potential and in fact they are encouraging the youngster that never mind, this change would only add to his potential.
