The latest Guyana news suggests that a Mentor, Ohio born adventurer Katie Spotz becomes the youngest-ever person to perform a solo ride all across the Atlantic Ocean while on Sunday March 14, 2010. The 22-year-old started her all alone journey on January 3 this year and it took her 70 days to reach Guyana from Dakar Senegal.

Her brave effort has earned Katie Spotz the title of youngest person to row solo across the entire Atlantic. She had started rowing from Dakar, Senegal all alone and reached the other end safely while she covered as many as 2,817 miles during the solo journey. When she showed up at the Guyana shores on the morning of Sunday in her rowboat; she had already set a new record.

While talking to the media subsequently, the little wonder stated that “Once I was in a situation I couldn’t escape, I had to really dig deep.” She further described the troubles she encountered with during her unbelievable rather incredible journey and stated that how she feared her tiny rowboat that’s only 19-foot long to capsize when all of a sudden the waves measuring to 20 feet, turned threatening.

On behalf of LIPA, Kevin Law informed that power outages are still being faced following a severe storm on Saturday. Tens of thousands of Long Island locals are confined to their houses without power though LIPA says outages are temporary and power would be restored shortly.

Kevin Law, who is the chief officer at Long Island Power Authority, informed the media on Monday that the outages faced by thousands of residents in various areas are temporary and that the damaged power-lines are being repaired on emergency basis and on top priority. During the media interview, Law further informed that outside help is also sought and power crews from outside Long Island are working hard to overcome the problem.

However, Law also appealed to the LIPA customers to cooperate and understand the severity of the prevailing situation since the storm they’re dealing with, is not an ordinary one and that the same has caused sever damages especially to the supply-lines. LIPA, however, hoped that with the help of external workforce the things would be fastened and the restorations operations would be completed ahead of time.

When the storm first hit the area on Saturday, overall nearly 144,000 residents of the Long Island suffered the power outage problems since countless trees were reportedly brought down by the extremely strong winds that blew them on the power lines. Meanwhile, the Rail Road services in the Long Island also suffered adversely and the same were suspended since the trees were found fallen on the tracks at several locations.

Some particular routes experienced forced closure for several hours thus adding to the troubles of the local residents. According to Kevin Law though the rescue workers were able to restore power in many of areas successfully, yet nearly 100,000 clients still await the same. Till Monday morning, only few thousand more LIPA customers could be provided with the power. The areas that suffered the most included Hempstead, Islip and Babylon.

In Connecticut, the light and power failure continued to trouble thousands of residents even on Monday following the severe storm in the region over the weekend. According to the updates from Light & Power Co. Connecticut, there were as many as 65,183 complaints from its clients that were left without power.

The windstorms that have hit the entire region of southwestern Connecticut for several hours now, has forced the residents to take shelter inside their houses and office buildings. The updates released by the authorities this morning i.e. on March 15, 2010 revealed that many areas such as Waterbury, Greenwich or New Canaan etc were adversely affected by the storm.

The authorities admitted that overall areas such as Greenwich and Darien suffered the most since 15,643 customers in Greenwich alone were left in complete dark without power while in Darien, 43.3 percent of the overall population was in the same condition as well. The storm was a severe one and it toppled countless supply lines thus leaving a wide range of areas in complete dark.

There were 849 customers reported without power in the Wilton area as well and this turns out to be almost 12 percent of the population in this particular area. There was a late night press release from the CL&P that suggested that Nor’easter storm caused severe damage to the supply-lines in the above noted areas. It was also mentioned that Norwalk, Stamford and Greenwich outages were primary and that no exact restoration projections could be possible due to a full magnitude storm that caused heavy rains and winds blows.

Tree and utility crews were in action till the last news arrived and they were trying their best to restore the service. It was also reported that cres from Massachusetts, Canada, Ohio and Vermont were called to join existing 200 or more already engaged in restoration activities.

Significant rains and extremely strong winds followed the storm that initiated on Saturday evening and reportedly, many of the trees various areas would bee seen uprooted and countless electric poles were also down.

Katie Spotz told the media officials that she faced many hindrances in sleeping, obviously it is very difficult to sleep on a rowboat in open waters. Katie Spotz stated that she feared that her rowboat could overturn when it was strike by huge waves. She was having sufficient food with her; she carried granola, frozen meals and dry fruits.

During her journey she was keep in touch with one of her friends who already rowed Atlantic in the year of 2008. Katie Spotz used a satellite phone and a modern GPS device as communication mediums. Solar panels were also placed on her 19 foot rowboat which motorized an ingenious contrivance that separated the salt out of sea water; in this way she was able to drink clean water on her boat. These solar panels enabled her listening audio books on her iPod.

One of the most popular ‘Mission: Impossible’ stars portraying Jim Phelps is no more and according to reports from family; Peter Graves died off heart attack on Sunday while at the age 83. Since the commencement of 2009-2010 cyclone season in the South Pacific from 3rd December, 2009 there have been many notable cyclones in the region and Cyclone Ului is one among them. Since the February 2005 Severe Tropical Cyclone Percy, Ului is considered to be the first South Pacific Category 5 cyclone and just recently it has been reported that the same has entered in the Australian Region.

On March 9, 2010 in the areas of Vanuatu Hiw Island some 80 miles in north, the first Tropical Disturbance was reported formed i.e. 13F and from then onward; it changed into a Tropical Depression. On 12th of March, the weather reports suggested it had turned into a Tropical Cyclone called Ului. Initially it was in category 2 but shortly strengthened and converted in to category 3.

By March 13, 2010 it had turned a strong and category 5 cyclone and the strong winds caused severe damages in the areas noted above and many of Rennell area houses in the Solomon Islands were reportedly damaged too. Julian Makaa the spokesman for NDMO Solomon Islands informed on Monday that Guadalcanal coastal area houses were washed away as well. The entire province experienced heavy rains following the strong winds and thunders continued for several hours.

Till the last reports arrived through Julian as well as from New Zealand Radio services, the wind speeds had come down to 116 km/hour thus suggesting it a category 4 cyclone lately.
