The University of Virginia has reportedly fired Al Groh as their head coach. Sunday proved to be his last day for 65-year-old Al Groh with Virginia following their 42-13 shocking loss to Virginia Tech at Charlottesville.
Already on the twilight of his career, Al Groh has been fired by the Virginia from his position as their head coach following yet another embarrassing defeat at the hands of arch rivals Virginia Tech. There seem to be two major factors behind Al Groh’s dismissal from the senior position; the Cavaliers’ vulnerability that caused them their eighth defeat against the Hokies and Al Groh’s nine failures.
Since nine seasons had passed for Al Groh as their football coach therefore his inability to motivate and bring his team back on the winning track, didn’t please the team officials. The inevitable happened and the 2002 and 2007 award winning Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year had to face the logical end to his tenure.
Loosing at home to a team ranked as No. 11 Hokies was more than a solid reason for the team management to end his career yet Craig Littlepage the athletic director, had a very respectful opinion about Al Groh. “Seldom have you found a coach in a college game such as Al Groh, worked so hard to bring the best out of his team,” said Craig in a subsequent statement. “He devoted himself to the university and sports that were his life, therefore everyone should be rather grateful to him,” he further added.
It was on December 30 in the year 2000 when Al Groh had been entrusted the responsibilities of a head coach by the Virginia as a replacement of George Welsh. He still had almost 2 years or so as per his contract with the school therefore, a sum of approximately $4.33 million may soon be offered to Al Groh as a buyout. Al Groh had a subsequent press conference also to express his views about the dismissal.
